Frequently Asked Questions

An SDU refers to a standalone residential property, such as a detached, semi-detached, or terraced house, that is occupied by a single household. Telecom providers often treat SDUs differently from apartment blocks (MDUs) when installing broadband services.

For SDUs, fibre (FTTP) is typically run from the nearest street cabinet or pole directly into the home. An Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is installed inside, usually near where the cable enters the property, and connected to your router.

Not necessarily. SDUs and MDUs can both get ultrafast speeds if full fibre is available. However, SDUs often have simpler installations since the cable goes directly to the property without needing internal building distribution.

Yes. Since engineers need access to the property to drill a small hole, install the ONT, and set up your connection, someone over 18 must be home for the appointment.

Yes — within reason. The engineer will try to place the ONT and router in a convenient location near a power socket and within reach of where the fibre enters the house. You can discuss placement during the visit.
